British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
