Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
